Finally, in a single, fragile moment of trust, the dog shuffled backward just enough. Manny slid his arms under the girl’s delicate form and lifted her. She was heartbreakingly light, like holding a bundle of empty clothes.
As he hurried toward his patrol car, the dog trotted steadfastly at his heel, refusing to be left behind, as if connected to the girl by an invisible tether. Inside the vehicle, as the heater roared to life, the girl’s eyelids fluttered open. She released a faint, crumbling whisper—”Max…”—before sinking back into unconsciousness.
